A legacy of mentorship and
dedication to student success continues to thrive at West Virginia University, where the H.E. Kidder Freshman Scholarship
honors the life and work of a beloved professor and adviser who inspired
generations of students at the Davis
College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
The H.E. Kidder Freshman Scholarship is open to first-time freshmen studying Animal and Nutritional Sciences.
Dr. H.E. “Doc” Kidder was a professor of animal and veterinary sciences at the Davis College until his retirement in 1988. Over his 34-year career at WVU, Kidder was a teacher, adviser, livestock and horse judging team coach, and dedicated mentor who profoundly impacted students’ lives.
Following his retirement, a scholarship fund was established for exceptional freshman students admitted to the Animal and Nutritional Sciences program at the Davis College. The scholarship serves as a fitting tribute to someone who invested so much of himself in student success.
This year the scholarship was awarded to three outstanding first-year students: Ashley Lake, Gianna Pintar and Ava Torpey.
“Receiving the H.E. Kidder Freshman Scholarship means more to me than I can express,” Lake said. “As someone navigating college entirely on my own, without financial support, this award lifts a tremendous weight off my shoulders.”
Lake hopes to attend veterinary school after graduation, and this scholarship provides critical support as she works toward that goal. It allows her to focus on her education and continue preparing for a career in veterinary medicine.
“Receiving the H.E. Kidder Freshman Scholarship means so much to me because it is an opportunity to continue pursuing something I am truly passionate about,” Pintar said. “I am grateful for the recognition this scholarship provides.”
Pintar hopes to make the most of the opportunity by working hard, getting involved on campus and continuing to grow throughout her college experience.
“Receiving the H.E. Kidder Freshman Scholarship means a lot to me because it honors a professor who devoted so much of his time to supporting students in my major,” Torpey said.
Torpey is thankful for the support, which will help her achieve her educational goals while easing some of the financial challenges that come with attending college.
Applications for the H.E. Kidder Freshman Scholarship for the 2027-28 academic year will be open until July 15, 2027. Applicants must have a cumulative high school GPA greater than 3.0 and/or a composite ACT score of 25 and/or a SAT score of 1200. Academic performance, demonstration of leadership abilities, and financial need are the basis for the selection of scholarship recipients. Scholarships are for one academic year and are not renewable. Visit the Davis Michael Scholars Program website for more information.
The scholarship was created through the WVU Foundation, the nonprofit organization that receives and administers private donations on behalf of the University.
