The project aims to develop maps that show environmental and social data for 3 watersheds in 3 states that will be used to inform community and ecosystem planning and adaptation in light of more extreme rainfall and flooding in the Appalachian Mountains.

More specifically, we are ground truthing the model on timber harvest lands through using Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs) and mist-netting. Along with bird banding, we also are collecting weather, vegetative, insect, and aquatic data to gain a better understanding of songbird concentrations across migratory pathways.

Banding takes place on weekends from an hour before sunrise to about five/six hours after sunrise. This project is in early development, with the goal of banding to gather data on avian survival and reproduction.
Read More: Bird BandingBeginning in 2003 our lab has been monitoring Brook trout populations at 25 sites in the Monongahela National Forest and the Westvaco Wildlife and Ecosystem Research Forest. We collect stream habit data in the summer time (June-August) and then in the fall (October-December) we sample for Brook trout using backpack electroshockers to evaluate current population metrics. In addition, we sample Brook trout spawning habitat through the collection of sediment samples adjacent to Brook trout redds.
