MacDonald, Nora

Professor Emeritus of Fashion, Dress & Merchandising

Nora MacDonald is a professor emeritus of fashion, dress and merchandising in the School of Design and Community Development.

During her career, her teaching assignment includes: apparel design and illustration, visual merchandising, apparel production and fit, flat pattern design, fashion study tour, and teaching practicum. In addition, she taught functional apparel, internship, figure and fabric drawing, and fashion design portfolio. She also served as Curriculum Coordinator for the Davis College and College of Creative Arts Disegno Italia study abroad program.

Her research interests include functional apparel design, clothing for older persons, and educational pedagogy. She has published over 100 juried articles and abstracts and is the author of Principles of Flat-Pattern Design, now in the fourth edition. From 1991-2005, she co-curated exhibits that explored the relationship between historic costume and contemporary apparel at the WVU Creative Arts Center, Cultural Center in Charleston, WV, historic homes through the Victorian Wheeling Landmarks Foundation in Wheeling, WV, and Zanesville Art Center in Zanesville, OH. Currently she is in the process of co-authoring a book on clothing for older women.

MacDonald is active in professional organizations. She served as President of the International Textile and Apparel Association following involvement at many levels. In 2008, MacDonald was named an ITAA Fellow. She served Gamma Sigma Delta as President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Historian. MacDonald’s service to the West Virginia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences included holding the offices of President and President-Elect. In addition, she served as Chairperson for the United Nations 1999 International Year of Older Persons Clothing Initiative working with ITAA, the UN Committee on Ageing, and the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association.
