WVU School of Design and Community Development, 'Day of Design' featured speakers

Matt Powers, 2018 Landscape Architecture Distinguished Alumnus

Matthew "Matt" Powers, Ph.D., associate professor, is the director of Landscape Architecture and  Undergraduate Programs in the School of Architecture at Clemson University. He holds a bachelor's in landscape architecture from West Virginia University and a master's in landscape architecture and doctorate in environmental design and planning from Virginia Tech. 


Powers has taught a range of studios and seminars focusing on instructional design, research planning, and environmental design at various scales. He regularly teaches courses at the bachelors, masters and doctoral levels. 


His primary research interests include design pedagogy, healthy campuses, and learning landscapes. Prior to entering academia, he worked in landscape architecture and community design studios in West Virginia, South Carolina, and Virginia. 


Terry Ryan, partner, Jacobs Ryan Associates and 2018 E. Lynn Miller Lecture

Terry Warriner Ryan is a partner at Jacobs/Ryan Associates in Chicago, Illinois. Her professional practice has been in landscape architectural planning, design and consultation to governmental agencies, corporations, developers and owners. 


Ryan's work is marked by creativity, a strong horticultural knowledge base, a love for native landscape materials, and a passion for design excellence.

 

While in Los Angeles, California, Ms. Ryan worked for Donald M. Roberts and Warren E. Lauesen and Associates practicing deluxe residential design from 1975 to 1979. At the end of 1979, Ryan moved to Chicago and joined the firm, then B. Jacobs & Associates, becoming a partner of Jacobs/Ryan Associates in 1982. 


Ryan has a bachelor's in landscape architecture from the University of California - Los Angeles.
