Natural Resource Economics

Trees in the forest This program involves applied economics coursework and research with an emphasis on natural resource economics (NRE). It allows students to further specialize in (1) natural resource and/or environmental economics, (2) regional economics and/or development, or (3) spatial analysis. The NRE program provides students with a strong foundation in economic theory, economic and policy analysis, and quantitative methods. The primary objective of the PhD in NRE is to educate professionals capable of meeting the demands at the highest levels of their chosen occupations.

Program Application Requirements

Program applicants will be evaluated based upon the following criteria:

  • current resume or CV,
  • a statement of interest consisting of at least 500 words that states the applicant's goals and objectives for graduate study plus describes the applicant’s previous relevant experiences and background,
  • three letters of recommendation based upon academic or employment experiences,
  • for applicants whose first language is not English, proof of English language proficiency must be provided with a TOEFL or IELTS (Learn more about our English language proficiency requirements),
  • a minimum grade point average is 3.0 (on a 4.0-point scale), and
  • the Graduate Record Exam with a combined score (verbal and quantitative) of 300 or higher.

Graduate Program Application Requirements

Students entering this program should be well prepared to successfully complete advanced course work in economic theory, economic policy analysis, and quantitative methods, at least at the master level.

Application Deadlines

Fall semester is when students normally enter this program. Applications must be completed no later than mid-May for citizens and permanent residents (green card holders), and no later than the end of March for international applicants. Since decisions about financial support are by the end of April, applicants should complete their applications by the end of March for full consideration.
