Research:

My research focuses on the impact of climate change on plant growth and development.

I have five undergrad students involved with two projects. One utilizes the LED lighting system developed by Osram in Germany, the world’s largest LED manufacturer. These LEDs were designed to produce red, green, and blue colors and we are investigating how each light of spectrum impacts plants’ growth and development. In this project, we are going to measure mineral uptake and secondary metabolite biosynthesis.

The second group of research involves three plant regulators developed by Verdesian, one of the leaders in plant regulator manufacturers. This project aims to understand how each chemical enhances plant quality under heat stress conditions.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a president. However, when I was in college, I realized politics was not my thing because it was so complicated. Since then, I have wanted to be a scientist.

What year in school was your favorite and why?

1999, because I met my wife that year.

What is something new you're learning?

I am interested in learning beyond what science can tell.

What's one class you wish you had taken in college?

Theology.

If you could go back to school, what would you study?

Probably theology. I am involved in genetics and molecular biology. I’d like to know how we interpret evolution/science, assuming something could exist beyond science.

What's a dream you have?

The holistic understanding of life and beyond.

What did you learn from 2020?

I wish I had mastered how to encourage students to learn. I’ve been teaching for more than 20 years at three different universities: Iowa State, Ohio State, and WVU. At all three universities, I really wish to learn how to motivate students to learn and how to encourage them and be genuinely involved in learning. It’s not just getting the grade. The year 2020 was very stressful because of COVID. This issue became an outstanding issue to me because many students actually quit, and I couldn’t help them.
