ECOLOGY AND FIELD STUDY COURSES

  • AEM 293: Field Microbiology (3cr)
Monongalia County, WV – Microbes are the most abundant and diverse organisms living on Earth. However, individual microbes cannot be seen with the unaided eye, and remain invisible to most naturalists. If you know what to look or smell for, many microbes leave macroscopic signs detectable without the aid of a microscope. Participants will travel daily into the surrounding area to observe distinctive communities of bacteria, fungi, algae, and lichens. Lectures at each visited site will emphasize field identification, biology and ecology of microbial communities. Microscopes will be provided to allow more detailed examination of natural materials. This course is appropriate for anyone interested in the natural sciences.
